Cookie policy – oddsguaranteed
Only a short list of technical tools operates on oddsguaranteed, and this policy sets them out, with their purposes and the ways of declining or altering them. Cookies are small text files that a browser keeps on a device; entries in local and session storage and counting pixels act in a similar fashion.
The governing rule
Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (PECR) governs this area. Putting information on a user’s device, or reaching information held there, requires clear and comprehensive information and the user’s consent, other than where the storage is strictly necessary to supply a service the user requested. The standard of consent comes from the UK GDPR (Article 4(11) and Article 7): freely given, specific, informed, unambiguous and as easy to withdraw as to give. The UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 also apply when cookies result in personal data being processed.
Essential files
The site cannot function reliably without some files. They keep a session going, share load between servers, shield forms from abuse and store the cookie decision. They are set without a separate choice. Session files lapse when the browser shuts, and the stored decision lasts at most twelve months.
Files set after consent
Functional files remember settings, for instance which comparison tables were opened last. Analytics files count page views and reveal which pages get read, in order to improve content. Consent through the banner comes first for both groups. IP addresses are shortened before analysis, and no profile following behaviour over several sites is built.
Third parties
Embedded content such as video or maps from other providers may place files of its own, and that provider’s privacy rules then govern; objections are made to the provider. oddsguaranteed sets no advertising cookies for personalised ads unless the banner offers a clear choice.
Altering or withdrawing a choice
Through “Cookie settings” in the footer, consent can be changed or withdrawn whenever wanted. Withdrawal works for the future and leaves earlier processing lawful. Browsers also let users block and delete cookies. When the necessary files are deleted, the banner appears again, and some features can fail for a while.
Supervision
Complaints about the handling of personal data go to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s supervisory authority. The privacy policy of this site describes how personal data is processed.
